South Stream's shortcut

Top management of Gazprom is obsessed with the idea of bypassing Ukraine. To materialize it, there is no need to build new pipelines to Baumgarten and/or Arnoldstein. A shorter link across Romania and Hungary to Slovakia would do it at a much lower cost (yellow dotted line). According to the press-release of Gazprom, gas pipeline capacity of Slovakia is rated at 93 bcm/year and it can be expanded to 113 bcm/year.

Note that with a link between Bovanenkovo and Yamburg, the existing pipelines of West Siberia can evacuate all gas produced in the Yamal peninsula and "old" West Siberian fields.
